Compositores como Syd Barrett, são exemplos da dualidade loucura-lucidez dos gênios. Através de suas inspirações "ácidas", Syd conseguiu ir além de seu tempo, o artista é reverenciado como um dos principais introdutores do psicodelismo no Rock. Carismático e enigmático, cada show era uma surpresa para o público que ficava estasiado com a sua maneira irreverente de apresentar-se. Isso acabou influenciando não somente os artistas dos anos 60, mas também as gerações posteriores. Barret, tinha como base para sua obra o rock dos anos 50 de Bo Diddley e de Buddy Holly e outras de sua época como Rolling Stones e Cream.
Nascido em 6 de Janeiro de 1946, em Cambridge, Roger Keith Barret, ganhou o apelido de Syd ainda estudante da escola da cidade, onde começaria a fazer amizade com dois garotos: Roger Waters e David Gilmour. Começou a tocar em bandas com nomes como The Abdabs, The T-Sets, Sigma 6 e até Meggadeath. O pessoal desses grupos era mais ou menos o mesmo: Bob Close, Roger Waters, Nick Mason e Rick Wright. Com a saída de Bob, Syd resolveu fundar uma nova banda: Pink Floyd. O nome fora retirado de dois “bluesmen” obscuros, Pink Anderson e Floyd Council.
Com o passar do tempo o grupo foi conquistando espaço no cenário musical da época, Syd Barret lançou dois álbuns com o Floyd, entre eles The piper at the gates of dawn (1967), onde participou ativamente como principal compositor e escritor, inovando e explorando as capacidades sonoras da distorção e do reverb (eco). No segundo álbum A saucerful of secrets (1968), a relação de Syd com os integrantes da banda se complicou, o seu envolvimento com drogas psicotrópicas (LSD) aumentavam e o seu comportamento era a cada ensaio imprevisível. A situação complicou-se de tal forma que Barret foi dispensado do grupo para não causar mais transtornos.

Para substituí-lo o grupo contratou um velho amigo, o guitarrista David Gilmour, que aos poucos foi conquistando espaço na banda até tornar-se um dos líderes ao lado de Roger Waters. David havia sido professor de guitarra de Barret e embora não fosse tão experimentalista quanto o aluno, era um músico talentoso. Após sair do Pink Floyd, Syd inicia a sua breve carreira solo lançando "The Madcap Laughs" (1970) e Barrett (1971). Depois disso, o músico entrou em um declínio, afundando no mundo das drogas e da doença mental.
Embora tenha saído do Floyd, Barret deixou a sua influência enraizada na banda. O álbum de 1975 "Wish you were here" foi um tributo do Pink floyd feito a Syd Barrett, a faixa "Shine on you crazy diamond", fala sobre o músico, conforme é reconhecido por alguns membros dos Pink Floyd. A faixa "I know where Syd Barrett lives" de Television Personalities é outro tributo bem conhecido. Supostamente, Roger Waters, usou a partida de Barrett e a sua condição, como inspiração para o álbum The dark side of the moon, assim como, terá baseado o comportamento e personalidade de 'Pink', o principal personagem do filme The Wall, na vida real de Barrett.
Syd Barret, faleceu no dia 7 de Julho de 2006, aos 60 anos de idade, em Cambridge. Debilitado devido a diabetes, enfermidade que já sofria há alguns anos, o "Diamante louco" partiu deixando inúmeros fãs e a sua marca registrada na história do Rock e da música mundial.
